Honda outboard rigging, in plain terms
Rigging is everything between the engine and the person driving the boat: the control box at the helm, the key switch panel, the harness that carries power and signal down the gunwale, the control cables or drive-by-wire cabling, the gauges, and the propeller. Get one piece wrong and the engine either will not start or will not shift.
Honda publishes a rigging tree for every engine family — a page listing exactly which parts an installation takes and which choices are yours to make, such as cable length or switch orientation. This builder holds all 49 of those trees and 678 Honda part numbers, covering 136 current Honda outboards from 2.3 HP to 350 HP, so the package it prices is Honda's specification rather than an estimate.
The engine families Honda rigs differently
- BF8D • BF9.9D • BF15D • BF20D
- BF25D • BF30D
- BF40D to BF100A
- BF115J • BF140A • BF150D Mechanical
- BF200D • BF225D • BF250D Mechanical
- iST® — serial 1100001~Subsequent (current)
Mechanical engines shift and throttle through push-pull cables. iST engines are drive-by-wire, so they need engine drop cables, a trunk cable and an NMEA 2000 backbone instead — and Honda splits those trees again by engine serial number, because the two iST generations do not take the same parts.
Rigging and installation labor
BOE Marine quotes rigging labor flat-rate by engine size. The figure covers mounting, controls, harness routing, fuel connection, water test and factory warranty registration.
| Engine size | Labor |
|---|---|
| 250 HP and Above | $1,799 |
| 140 to 225 HP | $1,439 |
| 25 to 115 HP | $899 |
| 20 HP and Under | $539 |
Installation supplies — wire loom, cable ties, terminals, heat shrink, sealant, fasteners and mounting hardware — are quoted alongside it:
| Engine size | Supplies |
|---|---|
| 115 HP and Higher | $350 |
| 25 to 100 HP | $250 |
| 20 HP and Under | $150 |
Both figures are starting points. An awkward transom, an old engine to remove first, or rigging that has to be re-run will move them, and your advisor will say so before the work starts.

Honda outboard rigging: common questions
What does it cost to rig a Honda outboard?
Rigging cost is the engine plus four things: the control and harness package Honda specifies for that installation, gauges, a propeller, and installation labor. BOE Marine quotes rigging labor flat-rate by engine size, with installation supplies — loom, ties, terminals, heat shrink, sealant and hardware — quoted alongside it. The parts themselves depend on the engine and the helm layout; this page builds a complete package in about four clicks and we email your price, usually the same day.
What parts do I need to rig a Honda outboard?
Honda publishes a rigging tree for each engine family that lists exactly what an installation takes: a control box, a key switch panel, a main harness or drive-by-wire cabling, control cables cut to the run, and on iST engines an NMEA 2000 backbone. BOE Marine's rigging builder holds all 49 of Honda's published trees, so the parts list comes from Honda's own catalog rather than from memory.
What is Honda iST?
iST is Honda's drive-by-wire throttle and shift system, fitted to BF115J, BF140A, BF150D, BF200D, BF225D, BF250D and BF350A engines. Instead of push-pull cables, the control sends a signal down a DBW harness, which is why an iST installation needs engine drop cables, a trunk cable and an NMEA 2000 backbone that a mechanical installation does not. Honda splits its iST rigging trees by engine serial number, and the parts differ between the two generations.
Does a Honda outboard come with a propeller?
Portable Honda outboards generally include a propeller; larger engines are usually quoted with one chosen for the boat. Honda lists propellers by diameter, pitch, blade count and rotation, in aluminum and stainless, across several product lines — Solas Titan, Saturn, Lexor, RUBEX PRO, HYDRO, OFS and Honda Turbo among them. A counter-rotating engine takes a left-hand propeller.
What gauges work with a Honda outboard?
From BF40D up, Honda outboards are NMEA 2000 compatible, and Honda's recommended setup is a multi-function color display on an NMEA 2000 backbone — the HD-4, or the HD-5 on the BF350A. Analog Faria gauges are the alternative, either as a matched five-gauge set or chosen individually, and both need Honda's fused instrument harness. Engines below 40 HP take analog gauges.
How long is the warranty on a Honda outboard?
Honda's True 5 warranty is a full, non-declining five-year limited warranty for recreational use, two years for commercial or rental use, with optional extended coverage of up to 36 additional months. Non-declining means year five is covered exactly as well as year one — nothing steps down and nothing prorates.
Can I finance a Honda outboard repower?
Yes. BOE Marine finances through Sheffield Financial, and pre-qualifying takes a couple of minutes with no impact on your credit score. Financing is available on every Honda outboard BOE Marine sells, including the rigging and installation on the same quote.
Who installs Honda outboard rigging in Maryland?
BOE Marine, at 325 Cleat St, Stevensville, MD 21666, is an authorized Honda Marine dealer and repower center on Kent Island, just off Route 50. Factory-trained technicians rig and install Honda outboards with genuine Honda parts and full factory warranty registration. BOE Marine is also an authorized Optimus dealer and installs Optimus electronic power steering, quoted separately.
Which Honda outboards does this rigging builder cover?
All 136 current Honda Marine outboards, from the 2.3 HP portable to the 350 HP BF350A, in both mechanical and iST drive-by-wire form, standard and counter rotation, and Grand Prix White. Superseded engines are reachable too, for rigging a second helm onto an engine already on the boat.
