Egis Mobile Electric: Marine Circuit Breakers & Bus Bars Built for the Marine Environment
Egis Mobile Electric specializes in marine-grade circuit protection — circuit breakers and bus bar connectors designed to handle the vibration, moisture, and corrosion that destroy automotive-grade components in a season. If you're building out or upgrading a marine electrical panel, Egis deserves a hard look.
Egis 87 Series vs. 285 Series Circuit Breakers
Egis makes two main lines of circuit breakers for marine use:
- 87 Series – Panel mount and surface mount options. A versatile breaker for main and branch circuit protection. Available from 20A to 250A.
- 285 Series – Compact surface mount breaker with a lower profile. Good for tight installations where space is limited.
- Mini Series – Lightweight panel-mount breakers for smaller circuits and accessory protection.
Why Use Circuit Breakers Instead of Fuses?
Fuses are one-time-use — when they blow, you need a replacement on hand. Circuit breakers trip and reset, which is ideal for marine applications where you may be far from a marine store. A tripped breaker is also a diagnostic signal: something drew too much current. A blown fuse tells you the same thing, but leaves you dead in the water without a spare.
Bus Bar Connectors
Egis bus bar connectors (L-shaped and quad-shaped) make it easy to combine multiple bus bars into a larger distribution system. Useful when expanding an existing panel or building a custom power distribution center.

🔌 Expert Advice from Mack Jennings
When I'm spec'ing an electrical panel for a refit, I look at two things: the quality of the breakers and the quality of the bus bars. Egis checks both boxes at a price point that makes sense for most boats. Their 87 Series breakers are what I'd call "set it and forget it" — once they're in, you don't think about them again.
On sizing: always size your breaker to protect the wire, not the device. The breaker is there to prevent the wire from overheating and starting a fire. A 12-gauge wire is rated for 20A — use a 20A breaker with it. If the device only draws 5A, that's fine — the breaker will still protect the wire if something goes wrong downstream.
